A.L.C Festival Poster
The goal for this poster was simple: create a work that represented the them that we had come up with in class. My class decided to go with the idea of "a leap of faith". The idea was to integrate the name of the festival - the L.E.A.P festival - into our class theme. I chose to do the first thing that came to mind when I thought of a leap of faith; someone jumping into the unknown as a literal representation. There was also a deeper meaning to this poster that was explored with the different components in the work.
Each part of this poster was carefully put together to immediately show the theme while also subtly deepening the overall meaning. To start, they were all made to represent the different competencies available in the ALC program: music, art, literature, language, and computer design.
The music component is represented by the guitar that the woman jumped off of.
The art component is represented by the poster as a whole.
The literature component is represented by the quote from Harper Lee "Things are never as bad as they seem".
The language component is represented by the translating into Chinese (disclaimer it may not be perfect) "事情从来没有看起来那么糟糕." (Shìqíng cónglái méiyǒu kàn qǐlái nàme zāogāo)
The computer design component was kind of vague but is represented by the translate and pointer as if saying that the pointer was placing the translate button onto the poster.
Since I usually only work with graphite, or in monochrome the colors hold meaning for me as an artist as well as for this poster. For myself, it was an exploration into not often visited territory. In terms of the poster, each color has a meaning that represents something.
The yellow signifies the joy and hopefulness that can come from this leap of faith.
the red a symbol of the excitement as well as the danger that could occur.
The blue signifies the seriousness in making such a decision.
The colors in between also have meanings but I chose to give them my own: these middle colors represent the flowing, merging, and changing of one stage to the next. Change is gradual and so the colors change gradually as well.
Each of these aspects lends itself to an even deeper message that I wanted to convey with my poster. We are living in a difficult time and I wanted my poster to spread a sense of hope; we are currently facing the storm but things will get better. The colors, the quote, and even the leaping woman are all supposed to demonstrate this very message. We will get through COVID-19, we just need a little faith.
